Louisiana Automobile Dealers Association and Keep Louisiana Beautiful Partner with Local Auto Dealers on the Roadside Litter Prevention Campaign

BATON ROUGE, La (press release) – According to the Keep Louisiana Beautiful (KLB) 2023 litter study, there are 143.8 million pieces of litter on Louisiana roadways and an average of 10,178 pieces of litter per mile on our interstates. Litter harms our wildlife, destroys habitats, pollutes our waterways, and undermines our civic pride. To respond to this problem, the Louisiana Automobile Dealers Association (LADA) is calling on Louisiana drivers to “Put the Brakes on Litter” through a new roadside litter prevention campaign developed in partnership with KLB and Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser.
As part of this campaign, dealers will display informative banners about the need to reduce roadway litter and supply litter prevention kits to new car buyers. These kits will include a car litter bag, portable ashtray, informational rack card, bumper sticker, and a car coaster with the litter hotline number, 855-La-Litter.
“Each year, local governments and other agencies spend more than $91 million cleaning up litter and illegal dumping. It’s time we turn the tide on littering, and I am excited to launch this new partnership with Louisiana’s auto dealers,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. “Not only will this help prevent more waste from accumulating in our communities, it will also reduce the burden on taxpayers who are footing the bill to clean it up. The solution is simple, but it takes all of us to do our part.”
Motorists can help “Put the Brakes on Litter” by:
- Keeping your truck bed clean
- Securing your load
- Using a portable ashtray for cigarette butts
- Keeping a trash bag in your vehicle for garbage
- Reporting littering to 855-La-Litter. Provide the license plate number and vehicle make.
“Louisiana is full of natural beauty and one of the easiest ways to see it is by driving on our roads and highways. As an auto dealer helping to connect Louisianians to this experience, I am excited to offer this free, simple solution to Louisiana drivers to help preserve our state’s beauty. Let’s all take steps to address litter where it starts,” said Keith Hanks, vice president of Lakeside & Northshore Toyota.
KLB Executive Director Susan Russell said, “We are pleased to provide these kits to vehicle buyers, free of charge, and hope this campaign will encourage motorists to be good environmental stewards. Together we can clean up Louisiana.”
Across the state, 36 dealerships will be taking part in the August launch of the campaign, “Put the Brakes on Litter.” Please check with your local dealership today or visit www.lada.org to learn more.
