Organizers share that Henry Turner Jr.’s Listening Room has been coined the last blues live music juke joint in Baton Rouge.

The venue opened on Feb. 13, 201,4 as a tribute to famed bluesman Tabby Thomas and is modeled after his club Tabby’s Blues Box, which is where Henry worked as a young musician, along with King Solomon, who played in Tabby’s band.

In 2015, the room moved to the Atrium at the Belle of Baton Rouge Casino. When that contract expired in 2016, an opportunity arose to take over the original facility and expand the hours of operation to Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Since then, it has become the headquarters for Henry Turner Jr.’s Listening Room Museum Foundation, a 501(1)3 non-profit organization that produces Blues Camp, the annual Listening Room Film Festival and “Henry’s Listening Room,” a musical variety television show that is currently in worldwide syndication.

The foundation also produces free, live, community-based music and food festivals, including the Annual Baton Rouge Mardi Festival, Baton Rouge Soul Food Festival, (Neighbor) Hood Fest, A Taste of the Deep South and the Listening Room Film Festival.

Sponsors and supporters include We Get Artists, Spring Board Texas, Live Music Society, For the Record a Tracy 2Step Production, Cutting Edge, Rebirth Film Shield Productions, Fresh Wave Media Solutions, Jazz and Heritage Foundation, WBRZ 2+, EPR Public Libraries, Lamar Advertising, Baton Rouge Soul Food Festival and Henry’s Listening Room TV Show.
