Alexandria Events: Harlem Globetrotters, Monster Trucks and More

ALEXANDRIA, La – While the holiday season – and the many events that come with it – has come to a close, that doesn’t mean Alexandria events are slowing down this month.

Alexandria has a multitude of events happening this month with a little something for everyone.

When: Jan. 9, 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.

Where: Rapides Parish Library, Martin Luther King Jr. Branch, 1115 Broadway Ave., Alexandria, La 71302

In this interactive experiment, teens will create their own fizzy snowflakes using baking soda, vinegar and water. Rapides Parish Library will explore the basics of acid-base chemical reactions while designing shapes that fizz, bubble and pop.

Online registration in advance is required as space is limited. Please log in with your library credentials to reserve your place at this event.

When: Jan. 10, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Where: 933 Main St., Alexandria, La 71301

The second Saturday of each month offers free admission to the public. 

Other events at the museum this day include:

  • 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Stitching Circle
    • Anyone can come and knit or stitch in the galleries. Open to all ages. Just getting started? AMoA has limited materials to get you started. Free and open to the public.
  • 1 – 4 p.m., Textile Mini-Banners Workshop with Wendy Starn
    • Join local artist, Wendy Starn, for an afternoon of textile crafting. Participants will create their own mini banners using techniques like stenciling, gluing and stitching to create one-of-a-kind word art pieces. $30 Members | $35 Non-Members

The Martin Luther King Jr. Branch will host the book talk and signing of Michael Wynne’s latest biography.

Michael Wynne, collector, historian, speaker and preservationist (just to name a few), will have books for sale as he brings us new truths that have remained hidden for so long about the history and heritage of Jean Baptiste Lafargue.

Joining Michael Wynne to enlighten and educate you will be the great-great niece of J. B. Lafargue, environment reporter at The Times-Picayune/NOLA.com in New Orleans, and fiction writer from Los Angeles, Josette Abugov.

When: Jan. 13, 4 – 5:30 p.m.

Where: Rapides Parish Library, Main Library, 411 Washington St., Alexandria, La 71301

In this unique STEM program for ages 10-18, participants will start with a piece of diamond art and learn how to transform it into a vibrant digital design. Using scanners or cameras and free editing software, teens will explore how images are digitized, enhanced and stylized using technology.

Alexandria Museum of Art Creative Roundtable 

When: Jan. 13, 5:30 – 7 p.m.

Harlem Globetrotters

When: Jan. 19, 7 – 9 p.m.

Where: Laborde Earles Coliseum, 5600 Coliseum Blvd., Alexandria, La 71303

The Harlem Globetrotters’ 100 years of Joy tour will come to Alexandria, La. This is a fan celebration from the moment you arrive with epic new pre-game magic, unforgettable post-game interactions and the most fan-fueled experience in sports.

A warning to any fans with light sensitivity that strobing effects will be used during light shows within the Harlem Globetrotters game.

Monster Truck Winter Nationals

When: Jan. 31, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.

Where: Laborde Earles Coliseum, 5600 Coliseum Blvd., Alexandria, La 71303

Faith Phreed, the world’s youngest female driver, is back! Monster Truck rides, Louisiana Side by Side Racing Championships, Spiderman and more.
