Free Louisiana Wildlife Activity Book for Kids
BATON ROUGE (press release) – The Louisiana Wildlife Federation (LWF) released a new edition of its “First Time Fishing in the Atchafalaya Basin” activity booklet, a free resource supported by the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area.
“Since the first booklet was released more than a decade ago, thousands of young people have been introduced to the basics of fishing,” said Rebecca Triche, executive director of the Louisiana Wildlife Federation. “With this updated edition, we hope to inspire the next generation to connect with nature and enjoy fishing in the Basin.”
The booklet follows Emma as she and her dad take Michael on his first fishing trip.
Along the way, they learn basics like baiting a hook and casting a line, discuss the importance of obeying catch-size and licensing regulations and take in the beauty of the Atchafalaya Basin and its Louisiana wildlife.
This new edition was written by Dottie Hartman and illustrated by Anna Wilson, a New Orleans-based artist.
The booklet also features games and activities like a fishing checklist, word search and a “Geaux Fish” game with illustrated native fish.
“The Atchafalaya Basin is such a truly unique and beautiful landscape,” said Caroline Cassagne, executive director of the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area. “This activity booklet offers a prime opportunity for young people and their families to learn how they can experience the wonder of the Atchafalaya region themselves.”
