MLK Fest 2026 in Baton Rouge Ends with Block Party

BATON ROUGE – The Walls Project hosted MLK Fest 2026, a two-day service event honoring MLK Day in Baton Rouge, on Jan. 17 and Jan. 19.
The fest kicked off on Saturday, Jan 17. with the following highlights:
- Elder Home Repair and Beautification – Painting and refreshing of local elders’ homes
- Blight and Litter Removal – Picking up trash and debris
- Living Galleries – Creating art to be placed all over Baton Rouge as a living gallery
- Mural Court and Breezeway Painting – Beautifying the courts at a local BREC park.
The same service opportunities were offered Jan. 19 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Check-in was at 4000 Gus Young Ave., and volunteers served the area from 22nd St. to N. Foster Dr. and from North St. to Choctaw Dr.
Project locations are proposed and selected in partnership with local stakeholders, like EnvisioNBR, GEEP Neighborhood Association, New Look Neighborhood Grocery, BREC, GEEP Blight Team Ministry and Starhill Baptist.
From 12 – 3 p.m., a block party and resource fair follows MLK Fest 2026 at Park Medical Elementary, including:
- Kid zone
- Food trucks and other vendors
- Live music from Archie Williams, The Michael Foster Project and HD for President
- Racial healing conversation from 1 – 2:30 p.m.
The Walls Project leads programs, events and alliances that work to break through and tear down the societal walls that discourage or prevent people from living safe, healthy and prosperous lives.
