Man on 5,800-Mile E-Bike Journey Reaches Louisiana
The Solo 5,800-Mile E-Bike Journey Across the U.S. to Raise Awareness of Peripheral Neuropathy

NEW ORLEANS — Riding solo, Dr. Gregory Maassen seeks to accomplish a 5,800-mile e-bike journey across the United States. According to the bike tour’s Instagram page, Maassen arrived in Louisiana on Monday, April 6.
The live GPS tracker currently shows Maassen stopped in the heart of Downtown New Orleans near Canal St. Maassen’s arrival in New Orleans marks the end of the second segment of the 5,800-mile e-bike journey, which includes 10 total segments. The next segment will be New Orleans to Houston.
About Maassen and His 5,800-Mile E-Bike Journey
Maassen, a native of the Netherlands, began his four-month, cross-country journey from West Palm Beach, Florida, to Los Angeles, California, on March 2.
In partnership with the Merkin Peripheral Neuropathy and Nerve Regeneration (PNNR) Center at Johns Hopkins University, Maassen rides to raise awareness for peripheral neuropathy, a painful neurologic condition that affects more than 30 million people in the U.S.
Maassen himself is a peripheral neuropathy patient who turned to exercise, specifically e-biking, as part of his recovery and hopes to encourage others to embrace exercise and movement for health and wellness.
He founded E-bike Lovers to provide members with free, high-quality e-bike travel experience. According to organizers, this group is the largest and most inclusive group of e-cyclists in the United States. Maassen credits e-biking and physical activity with helping him manage his symptoms.
Maassen honors his Dutch-American heritage by riding with a pair of wooden shoes. He will wear them mostly when he is camping during the cross-country e-bike tour.
Maassen’s 5,800-mile e-bike journey is his second cross-country route. In 2022, his first long-distance cycling tour took him from Washington D.C. to San Francisco along the Lincoln Highway. Gregory, a filmmaker, also produced a documentary, “Only Lazy American E-bike.”
